Since the establishment of the Do Gooders of Hampton Roads in 2015, we have strived to put together events that impact the community of Shell Road, located in the residential area of downtown Hampton. We never expected our impact would reach the entire city of Hampton and its residents, but it has. With a 2020 population of 135,050, it is the seventh-largest city in Virginia and the 204th largest city in the United States, Virginia, with Hampton's overall poverty rate at 15.18% (World Population Review, 2022). One of the largest populations living in poverty is Blacks at 20.9% or 13,006 people (FeedVA, 2022). The Virginia Department of Social Services (2022) reports 1,848 households participating in SNAP out of 10,499 total eligible homes, with 2,709 people participating in SNAP against the total number of 20,730 eligible citizens Hampton as of September 2021. The research explains the need for families who live in poverty in Hampton to have accessibility to not only food but other necessities such as backpacks, school supplies, coats, clothing, bedding, and so much more!
